| | | Re: 2 unknown fungi Hi
Number 1 is The Velvet Shank (Flammulina Velutipes) it is called Velvet Shank because of the dark velvet texture to the base of the stems. It is a winter fruiting fungus which can stand being frozen solid and then continues to grow and shed spores when it thaws out, this is an unusual feature for a large toadstool. It has started to appear all over the UK since the New Year. Number 2 is also most likely to be also a Velvet Shank as it is a variable fungus and there is little else looking like that and fruiting this time of the year.

| | | Re: 2 unknown fungi Agree that 1 is Velvet Shank (Flammulina Velutipes), but not 2, thats more like an Oyster, Pleurotus species because of the gills and lack of long stem - they also have appeared this week near me, so its the right time to find them even in frosty weather.
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: 2 unknown fungi good call Rob, oysterlings too are about in frosty weather and orangey gills are right, they are slimy, which probably leads to the frozen look on these.
Again, saw some of these yesterday, but more olive cap.................
Cheers
Ken

I would say no, as you can see the stipe in one specimen and it clearly shows no trace of the yellow velvet that characterizes Panellus serotinus.
bestr egards,
Andreas

bestr egards,
Andreas | Hi Andreas
I must admit I wasn't sure what was cap and what was stipe and having another look I'm still not sure.
Another case of needing another view from a different angle.
Rob
