| | | ID help: Amanita, Boletus & Collybia Hi, everyone. Yuletide Greetings!
Got quite a few here I would appreciate ID help/confirmation with.
1. Amanita citrina? All photographed in beech woodland in Flackwell Heath, Buckinghamshire in late Sept/early Oct:
2. Amanita pantherina (photographed same location and date)
3. Armillaria mellea? Photographed on Oak in mixed woodland, west Berkshire.
4. Boletus badius? Photographed on heathland/birch & pine scrub woodland, Crookham Common, west Berkshire, mid-Sept
5. Collybia maculata? Photographed in mixed ancient woodland, west Berkshire, late Sept
Got a few more which I'll put in another post - been a bit busy lately, took me this long to get round to sorting out my photos!
As always, all help and guidance much appreciated. |

3 This has brown spores so not Armillaria. Gymnopilus?
4 Not badius with that twisted stem but what? Subtomentosus possibly.

no. 2 is Amanita spissa, not pantherina! Look at the stem bulb, it is so obviouse!
no. 3 is Gymnopilus junonius
no. 4 is probably Xerocomus ferrugineus, may be X. subtomentosus, depending whether it was blueing on pressure on the tubes (= subtomentosus) or not (= ferrugineus).
no. 1 and 5. is o.k. in my opinion.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: ID help: Amanita, Boletus & Collybia Thank you, both.
I'm wondering if 4 might be Xerocomus subtomentosus, as one source describes X. subtomentosus as having white basal mycelium, whilst X. ferrugineus is described as having lemon yellow basal mycelium. (You can't see in the photos I've posted, but another pic I have shows the basal mycelium as being much more white than yellow.) Both are described as having pores 'blueing or not when bruised'. Gymnopilus junonius sounds right for 3 - I wasn't happy with my ID because the spore colour was, as you pointed out, incorrect... But I wasn't sure when to look next. It's really helpful to have guidance towards fungi groups when working through identification. |

| | | Re: ID help: Amanita, Boletus & Collybia Hello,
you are right, there are different ways to interpret Xerocomus/Boletus ferrugineus and subtomentosus. When you don't lay stress on the blueing, then at least the flesh colour should be different in the two: Uniformely pale yellowish in ferugineus, yellow in the cap and paler in the stipe but apricot in the stipe base in subtomentosus. The yellow mycelium also indicates subtomentosus, but be aware that there are mycologist who separate a third species in that group, Xerocomus lanatus, which looks like a ferrugineus but with yellow mycelium ...... This lanatus should have a stipe with netlike ribs at least in the upper third or even more downwards, and is a species from broadleaf forests.
best regards,
Andreas
