It was a cold November morning in Perthshire, -7!! There were isolated 'growths' dotted about, on fallen branches. When they were touched, they seemed to disintegrate like frost but my husband says they seemed like some sort of fungi phenomena because the ground surrounding them was not white with frost or snow. Any help with this weird thing will be much appreciated. Many thanks. Heather  |

Hello Heather,
to be honest, your husband also has kind of right, because without fungal activity inside the wood this phenomen wouldn't occure 
How it is called in correct English I can't say, sorry. In German it is called "Haareis", what means "hair ice".
