| | | Bushcraft Without wishing to bring down the wrath of the Mods. I spotted a magazine in WHSmith today "Bushcraft" and one of the articles was about how good to eat the members of the Amanita family were. They included fulva rubescens excesla and MUSCARIA.

| | | Re: Bushcraft I wonder if someone could sue WHS for selling them a publication that informed them it was OK to eat something which, when they did, made them er... ill?
At least with all this snow and/or frost the whole country seems to be "enjoying" to some extent or another, the fungi in question are unlikely to put in an appearance until long after the magazines have been recycled and their contents forgotten about!

Mal | I think that could explain a lot ... If they're camping sauvage as well, without their televisions, dvd players etc, they'll have to make their own entertainment whilst roasting rabbits on the spit over their camp fires. So they'll be drinking reindeer's pee next, and flying broomsticks and seeing Father Christmas sailing across the sky in his sledge. |

| | | Re: Bushcraft I was always puzzled about the restaurant review I found on the web:
" Only at xxxx xxxxx restaurant in all of London can you order free-range quail stuffed with fly agaric mushrooms, ground peppered pork and mung bean noodles in a lotus seed broth - a Hanoi specialty."
The review is still there.
Anybody tried it!? |

| | | Re: Bushcraft Someone showed me this article in said mag - it did contain the usual disclaimers and was written in a hey arent we just so tough way, for effect for those who do read these things, but was also big on pointing out it wasnt deadly poisonous and some cultures do eat it on a regular basis (they are, I gather, on the decrease).
It made me laugh, but sadly could have an effect on the likes of impressionable types who will try anything once.
Cheers

If you've not been completely good then yours might come by Royal Mail though ... |

| | | Re: Bushcraft I am reliably informed that in the parts of France where fungi hinting is a tradition ALL Amanita are just chucked in the pan along with everything else.
Never been there myself and would not eat it if I was.

| | | Re: Bushcraft Bushcraft usually explains how to survive in the wild when many of the things we take for granted are not available. It's not all about finding tinder for fires and how to snare a rabbit but also how to find and prepare plants and fungi for nourishment. Amanita muscaria does seem a bit extreme but according to what I have read, this is one of a number of fungi that if properly prepared can be added to bulk up a soup or stew. Even if you don't get it quite right it seems that you will sing and dance for a couple of hours which will at least keep you warm. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
