| | | Toothed ? Fungi for ID Help Found on Saturday, at ground level, at the base of the trunk of a live tree.
I initially thought this was Hen of the Woods (which I've never yet seen).
However, on looking at the pore surface, the pores appear to be almost tooth-like in appearance.
The overall clump was approx 250mm across, and the fruitbodies were very flexible (almost like hard jelly), with a very distinctive "musty" type of smell, unlike anything I've ever smelled before on a fungus
Once again, any help towards ID much appreciated.
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: Toothed ? Fungi for ID Help Can't help much other than to suggest a Bankera species, according to a leaflet I have, these species can smell of Fenugreek or Curry Powder. I'd certainly class Fenugreek as a strong musty smell.
If no-one on here can help, I'd suggest trying the Scottish Fungi website, Scottish Fungi Liz Holden, one of the Mycologists who contributes on that site is very knowledgeable about toothed fungi and has help me distinguish between Hydnellum peckii and Hydnellum Ferrugineum.

John | It was a Beech John, but there are Maple & Scots Pine in the immediate area.
The fungus was growing tight up to the trunk on the soil - I couldn't establish whether it was actually on the wood, or just tight against it. (I didn't want to pull out the whole fruitbody to find out).

Probably another of those random thoughts but hey ho. | That looks a possible, but it grows on dead or dying Conifer according to my books.

| | | Re: Toothed ? Fungi for ID Help Are they really spines?
I suspect they are broken pores and that it is Grifolia frondosa, although it is difficult to be sure without the actual specimen
