Chris | I'll go for my first choice then, which was Psathyrella rivulosa
I've been getting these in their thousands for about 3 months on the wood chips near me and keep intending to work out which Psathyrella they are. I did check them early on, but couldn't reach a satisfactory id. I've collected quite a few samples over the weeks to have a repeat go, then put them at the bottom of the pile and left them until too late. They've been getting more obviously wrinkled as its got colder. So I started calling them Psathyrella rivulosa, getting my Psathyrella and Agrocybe muddled up ... and it was only when I posted that I realised Psathyrella rivulosa did not exist, that the thing I was thinking of was Agrocybe rivulosa ... and I even did a quick google, and the first to come up looked like these ... I think they've made the same mistake .... I've now checked other photos and they are paler as you said, and have the rings.
Anyway, I'l probably not make that mistake again ...
Oh, what do you mean by 'expallent', and how does that differ from hygrophanous?

Chris | bst you can do
But to be really certain that not someone else brings those things to you, you have to walk OVER them instead of walk on .....
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Unknown on Woodchip for ID Help Please Certainly no ring on any of these (including the young examples).
Should have mentioned in original post: -
I did think of some sort of Psathyrella, as the stipes were very brittle - breaking very easily indeed. They were also hollow.
(They don't look like any of the Psathyrella's in any of my books though).
The colours in the photos are pretty accurate, and the young ones were definitely that dark brown, with pure white stipes.

| | | Re: Unknown on Woodchip for ID Help Please Hello Mike,
that colour is not unusual for many of the bigger Psathyrellas. Without microscopy I think there is not the slightest chance to identify them properly on species level. If someone would look the microscopical features, I would not be surprised to find bottle-shaped Cheilocystidia, intermixed with sphaeropendunculate cells, and small spores of appr. 7-8,5 µm length.
If I sould do a guess, which of course is nothing more then a guess, then I would think it could be Psathyrella niveobadia. But that is just guessing, as I mentioned already, no?
best regards,
Andreas

In the absence of microscopy, I'm happy to get as far as Psathyrella sp.
(Much better than another totally "unidentified")
