| | | Confusing conical fungi I bet I'm going to end up kicking myself but this particular fungi is causing me plenty of confusion just working on the macro features. My initial thought is it is a mycena but it just doesn't quite tick the boxes. It's hollow stem was rather brittle though so I'm more inclined to believe it being a Psathyrella, possibly P. conopilus. Am I even close or have I missed the mark by a long way?
Found growing in primarily larch mixed with a few broad leafs.
Cap: 20mm high by 36mm across. Greyish brown, striate
Stipe: 65mm long by 4mm wide. Tan, smooth, hollow and brittle
Gills: whitish, adnexed, papery
Regards, a rather confused David |

| | | Re: Confusing conical fungi I think you may have been on the right track with Mycena. Psathyrella gills end up very dark. Is it possible to do a spore print, (leave the cap turned down on a piece of glass overnight). A white spore print would then suggest Mycena.
Cheers

I think you were right with your first thought. I think it is M polygramma. All the macro details fit.

| | | Re: Confusing conical fungi @watsthat: No chance of doing a spore print but then I always seem to have little success with them I think the only time I've been succesful with getting a spore print was with L. nuda. But thanks for the advice Pete
@flaxton: Gah! I am kicking myself. I'd actually reckoned on M. polygramma as a possibility last night when I was reading my ID books but had total mental blockage this evening when I sat down to work it out fully Thankyou as always Mal
