| | | Ascomycetes on sand at Lound Hello all
John (Jaybie), Les (Nettle Runner) and I visited Lound again at the weekend.
Within yards of the car John spotted this beautiful young Cortinarius violaceus ... or what appears now to be a very young Lepista nuda
Apart from the 'usual' interesting finds we've had recently at Lound we spent a good amount of time foraying in an area of sand and young Willow.
Not too long ago the area was remote and inaccessible due to 'quicksand' conditions.
On 'sand' banks and ridges this black asco was found. It was also evident that Rabbit dung was always present where the fungus was growing. Typical size 1mm dia
Macro image:
Not content on finding this species, Les found this red asco, again on sand and over a large area. Typical size <1mm dia

My first thoughts on the latter were possibly a Lamprospora!
We found several other interesting species but probably best suited in another thread.
All comments appreciated
JJL

JJL | Hi John - just noticed on this macro shot the green jelly like form in the middle of the ascos towards centre/bottom - any idea what this is?

JohnB | Hi John, it looks like it could be a lichen, possibly one of the peltigera family ?

ashgale. | I can't think of any species of Peltigera which are this colour of green, or so translucent. I don't think it is a lichen. Perhaps it's a liverwort but I'm too rusty on liverworts to be sure.
