| | | clubshaped and coronet shaped fungi to identify please Hello all
I can't stand it any more - PLEASE could someone tell me what these might be. As usual the books have been scoured with no clear solution.
All I know is that my first choice of a `pepperpot' is incorrect for the club-shaped one !!
Both were found at the edge of vineyards, but close to overhanging mixed broad-leaf woodland. Both are solitary specimens.
Thanks to anyone who can help. I've not encountered either of these previously.

| | | Re: clubshaped and coronet shaped fungi to identify please Hello,
the first is Pisolithus arrhizos, the 2nd one looks definitely like a Scleroderma. Which species - no idea. If it would be an italian or spanish forum here, I would guess Scleroderma meridionalis, but probably other Scleroderma species can also open in a star-shape like this. may be it is even a completely unusual Pisolithus. Did the 2nd fungus stand close to the first one?
Do they originate from Britain?
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: clubshaped and coronet shaped fungi to identify please Brilliant Andreas - I've just looked up the Pisolithus arrhizos on Google (haven't even been back to the books yet) and that's what it is. Thank you very much.
I also came across someones Gallery site on Flickr - there were some pictures of the coronet-shaped fungus, which were also labelled Pisolithus arrhizos, so it looks as though your second suggestion might be right for that one too.
The Flickr Gallery was Spanish. Those photos were taken in France, 200Km north of Spain. I also saw a comment which said they're rare - are they? Lots of American sites mention them.
And no - they appeared in fields at least 1Km apart.

| | | Re: clubshaped and coronet shaped fungi to identify please Hello,
Pisolithus ia a fungus which occurs only in special biotops, like waste dumps of mining and similar pioneer vegetation, on chalk-free, usually sandy, and nutrient-poor soil. Where you have such biotops, Pisolithus is not rare. In other areas without such biotops it is completely lacking.
But Sclerodermas may have similar biotop favorits, so this would not necessarily be a hint on the 2nd species you took pictures. I'm not too familiar with those fungi and would have to use microscope for the 2nd to say if its a Pisolithus or a Scleroderma.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: clubshaped and coronet shaped fungi to identify please Thank you again Andreas - they're lovely(?well, to their mothers.....................) things, whatever they are. I'll look out for more now - and have a better idea of what they are.
It's certainly not a sandy or chalk-free soil in the area, so that's a bit of a surprise.
