its becoming a new found interest

its becoming a new found interest | I am not able to tell you the species but that is almost certainly what you have.

| | | Re: Did this fungus kill a Grass-hopper Am I right in thinking that the fungus affects the insects behaviour, making it climb to the top of the grass stem before killing it to give the fungal spores a wider dispersal?

Dave P. | There are lots of flies of the genus Entomophaga which, as the name implies, attack insects: some of them are species or genus specific.
Yes, infested flies (particularly in Spring-Summer the dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria) do have this climbing tendency. Don't ask me how it works but the aim for the fungus is to get its spores as far from the ground as possible so they can disperse in the wind ..... |

I would also think it is most likely a species of Entomophthora.
I have a revised keys to this genus by Grace Waterhouse & BL Brady (no date)
In this key there are 106 species but only on listed for Grasshoppers (Orthoptera) this is E.grylli
In the BMS data base there are only 4 records (now called Entomophaqa grylli)
Therefore I think you probably have a very rare find and if you still have the grasshopper Kew may well be interested.

Peter | Thank you Peter Sorry I am an interloper and caused you confusion
I have a great interest in insects and usually have my I to the ground until this Spring which was hot and wet I have never seen this before. In a period of 3 /4 days I saw in excess of 50 like this it was only due to a recent posting that made me think. What a fascinating subject
Regards
Steve
