| | russula and waxcap? Hi everyone,
grateful for any help with these two.
first a russula, maybe ameolens? in mixed woodland, close to oak, not mushroomy smell, bit off smell, but only faint. Cap peeled about 3/4 way.
then a waxcap in open meadow, acid soil, seems like coccinea, scarlet, its very small, with yellowish, ruddy tinged gills, but the cap is so granular, any thoughts please?
Cheers

You should have dug a bit deeper into the litter around the base of your 'Russula'. The striate cap edge points to one of the grisette-type species of Amanita.
Your waxcap has a very squamulose cap. This points to three species which can only be separated for certain with microscopy: H. miniata, H. calciphila and H. substrangulata.

Ken | Right Ken, brilliant, my first reaction when I saw this was Amanita, err, and delving at the base including a sac too, cant believe I didnt stick with that and go on from there, which is why I ended up in a mess, but not really sure why. hey ho.
Miniata is always my first thought too with such a granular cap on a tiny scarlet waxcap, never thought of the others you mention.
I must learn to trust first instincts more, but only to a point.............!
I'll remember this lesson.
Thanks again for that steer.
Cheers
