| | | Blewitts fermenting Hi all
after happening across a good amount of L.nuda last week, I thought of preserving for future "study"
I consulted The Ultimate Mushroom Book (Jordan/Wheeler - isbn 1-84038-132-9) which suggested blanching and storing in oil or vinegar, but if storing in alcohol keep refridgerated to avoid fermentation. I opted for oil (rapeseed) but still seem to be getting some fermentation, to an extent that rather than risk a glass jar break (quite a lot of gas pressure bowing the lid!), I transferred to a more flexible plastic receptacle and refridgerated.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does the fermentation produce other toxins? Or just alcohol?
Intrigued

I have a scorpion that my daughter fetched back from Morroco. I dont like living creatures being encased in plastic, but fungi is different. Hobby shops may be able to help, or you can try the internet. Good luck.

Regards, David | I don't think resin would prevent the decay of a fungus. I can't imagine it would anyway! |

Free spirit | Interesting idea.

| | | Re: Blewitts fermenting I have seen fungi preserved in this way - specifically at the Musee du Champignon in the Loire where they have thousands of specimens on display. I can't recommend the place highly enough if you happen to be in the area - it was a real find when we discovered that we were camping only a few miles away!
In fact, I think it should be a field mycologists mecca!

Regards, David | No worries - in fact if your'e there in August next year I could see you there as I'm going back at the end of my summer hols.
I realised that the link doesn't really do the place justice from a field mycologists point of view. The website dedicates the vast majority of its space covering the cultivation of mushrooms whereas in fact the larger portion of the cave system itself is given over to the displays of wild fungi encased in resin. I took some photos last time I was there but lost them when my hard drive crashed - I will have to take some more when I go back .
Cheers,
J.

Have a look... Le musée du Champignon - au coeur d'une champignonnière en activité | Looks like it would be great. Last time I went to France about 5 years ago was Millau area (near the big viaduct and very close to Roquefort ) It was the first week of November and local foraging was in full swing. We joined in and had a marvellous time. And the local markets full of lovely edible goodies, not just fungi, big area for the Roquefort cheese, and also chestnuts/chatelaine. I'll try to dig out a couple of pics from my archive.
have a look at Marché de Millau and Evénements : Millau en Jazz, 100 km de Millau, la caussenarde... and http://www.aveyron.com/nature/champignon.html
Bon chance
Jon
