| | | Dacrymyces stillatus and Marasmius cohaerens? I think I've got these two correct. First is the common jellyspot I discovered by accident whilst moving some leaf litter out of the way
And what I was actually looking for were leaf parachutes. And I found a few growing on beech leaves. Proved to be quite a pain to photograph in the field (mostly due to my dog running around with a branch in her mouth) and terribly delicate that the specimens I brought back didn't survive the journey well (really need to start using solid boxes insted of bags)
Regards, David

Regards, David | Hi David
errrrrmmm . . . . . I don't think the top one is a Dacrymyces, but certainly not D. stillatus, a developing Tremella maybe Marasmius cohaerens is an altogether larger fungus - starting out at around 1cm when mature and with 12 - 20 main gills . . . . I think you have Marasmius epiphyllus * there
cheers
Chris PS * don't tell me that is what (that English name) is! everyone knows my opinion of most of these new-fangled concoctions!

| | | Re: Dacrymyces stillatus and Marasmius cohaerens? Lol, entirely my fault, I did mean Maramius epiphyllus (hence the use of the *shudder* english name in the description) but I've been up since 3:30am this morning and my eyes are somewhat tired. I'm doing my utmost to get my head into the use of the latin though, thankyou for noting my glaring screw up
And developing Tremella as a probable. Makes me wonder if I should have brought it back and put it somewhere in our bog garden to grow. I never think of these things at the time
Many thanks Chris With you help and the others of this site I'll eventually get proficient (to some degree at least)

| | | Re: Dacrymyces stillatus and Marasmius cohaerens? Your Marasmius shows some mycelium at the base of the stipe which is wrong for M epiphyllus. Depending on the size I would go for the other common one on fagus leaves at the moment M setosus(recubans).

Mal | interesting - I'll need to go back and look at some of my previous collections
I was following Courtecuisse - I don't like "mycelium at the base of the stipe" as a diagnostic character I have to admit - but if one is going along the gills well developed / not well developed route then Mal's suggestion is a good one
iodine reactions would sort it (my sort of character )
Chris

Chris | Chris
I have never used this as a diagnostic I just take a specimen home and get the microscope out. I was just putting forward a suggestion and then trying to justify it and came across this macro feature difference I will now pop out and check to see how reliable it is.

| | | Re: Dacrymyces stillatus and Marasmius cohaerens? I don't think I'll have any trouble finding these again this week end so I'll collect some more (using a box this time). I take it they dry easily enough? Hopefully getting a scope soon... then the fun really begins | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
