| | | Exidia thuretiana? Some of you may recall the last time I thought I saw this and poked it with my finger only to be told of the great slime mystery in Scotland. Well this time I'm kinda hoping I got it right (although I didn't poke it ). Found growing out of a deciduous log (probably hawthorn) in a row. Even if I've got the ID I'm wondering if someone can explain how E. thuretiana expels it's spores as all the photographs I've looked at it just looks likes an amorphous blob. Does it liquefy or something?

| | | Re: Exidia thuretiana? This is Exidia nucleata with small white crystals of calcium oxalate visible in the clear gelatinous material. It is often confused with Exidia thuretiana. Though appearing amorphous it does produce unusual shaped basidia on the surface, which are presumably kept turgid by water supplied from the gelatinous material, thereby enabling the basidia to mature and produce and release spores.

Yet again E. thuretiana eludes me (I'll track the blighter down one day ). I had thought it too opaque for E. nucleata but then the only image I have of that is in the Collins Comple Guide (which seems to truly live up to the english name of Crystal Brain). Well at least I'm getting closer. And thankyou for explaining the mechanics of it's spore release.
