| | | A. auricula-judae + green lichen(?) Found on a dead elder with quite a few extremely dry specimens this Jelly Ear looked great. But what is the green lichen(?) growing in this pic as well?

I was talking to someone about this only yesterday . . . . . the commonest lichen on WAB - Xanthoria parietina; in less shady conditions it appears much richer yellow in colour
cheers
Chris

I know absolutely zero about lichen but I've seen this around a fair bit. I rather like it

| | | Re: A. auricula-judae + green lichen(?) Not sure how it works, but the yellow pigmentation in the more sunlit specimens of this and other lichens is apparently a kind of sun block to protect the thallus, according to Mr. Dobson.
Have to say that I prefer the name Jew's Ear instead of the politically correct version because it refers to the origin of the species' English name, in that it was named after Judas Iscariot who supposedly hanged himself from a elder tree after betraying Jesus. It was called Judas' Ear and over time that changed to Jew's Ear. Tastes nice anyhow.
Cheers,
Adam |

| | | Re: A. auricula-judae + green lichen(?) I'm always interested in the origin of the English names. I just think Jelly Ear is a more apt description for it (but then I've likened the skin of a stump puffball to a cat's tongue and yet it probably looks more like a shaved cat's... ahem )
I'm also highly amused by political correctness and somewhat perversely go out of my wayto be exceptionally PC
And thanks for the extra information regards the lichen... I will eventually get round to giving those fellows more consideration
