| | | Xylaria longipes? It might be common but until this weekend I'd never noticed it. Found growing from a stump along with Xylaria hypoxylon (which I couldn't get a worthy picture of despite crouching in nettles) in mixed woodland. Really reminded me of a burnt out match in appearance
Not the easiest to slicebut I didn't expect the whitish interior (apologies for it being taken under electric light, t'was rather dark when we got back)
The question I'd like answered is who is responsible for the name Dead Moll's Fingers? |

| | | Re: Xylaria longipes? with regards to the name - could I suggest someone scraping the barrel
it certainly looks like longipes but the easiest way to make absolutely sure is to measure the spores (send me some - PM me - and I can do it in a minute; less tricky than some things I get sent)
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Xylaria longipes? Hi Chris,
Couple of problems, I'm back down in York and this was found in Gateshead. The sample is up there... And I dug it into my compost bin up there (which happens to most samples after photographing). I will bear that in future though
Plus eventually I'm hoping to get into the microscopic side of fungi (even dug my old microscope out from 20 odd years ago but it doesn't seem suitable)
Many thanks, David | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
