| | | Hygrocybe punicea? Hi
I found a few groups of these red waxcaps on unimproved upland grassland on Saturday. The fibrilose stem with white base made me think they might be Crimson Waxcap, H. punicea. The largest caps were about 80mm across.
If they are then it would be quite a good record as, according to the BMS database, there are only two previous known sites for this in the county.
Any thoughts?

hi Steve
I think that's H. punicea too! All the macro-characters there - lubricous cap (a bit paler than normal, but don't think that's significant), adnate gills, fibrillose stem (if only some other contributors took the trouble to show the characters as you have)
Chris PS - I haven't forgotten the disco's you sent, and will get round to them in due course - promise!

might be one to get the county recorder interested
The paleness is a issue with my aged laptop I think, when I post WAB images they often seem washed out compared to how I see them in PS. The shot I see here is a much deeper, richer red.
Glad the discos arrived safely (I was scraping the the barrel a bit with the packaging ).
