| | | Strange fungus in the Ribble valley During our walk in a conifer forrest this morning we came across a fungus, which i;ve never seen before...  After failing to identify it on the internet, i came across your site.
Does anyone know what this is called, ps there was 2 of them.

it looks like a small child  - but next to said fine infant is a specimen of Calvatia excipuliformis - the so-called pestle puffball (also as Lycoperdon excipuliforme in older books)

Chris PS - just checked - it's back in Lycoperdon (still the same fungus, though!)

I have seen it in the Ribble Valley and around the Silverdale/Arnside area too and poss (memory not so good these days!) on Beacon Fell as well  and prob the Lake District too .......
