| | | Unidentified Fungi We set off this morning early in the New Forest looking for red deer but Ober heath was very quiet but the fungi in the surrounding woods were on form.
Got some nice shots in general but Im in need of help with identifing this one found deep in a wood
Found under a 20 year old oak tree in an ancient oak wood.
It was approx 9'' across and 3''-4'' high
There were 3 of these 6'0'' apart, 1 had started to disintergrate and the one below had not yet opened.
Any help would be appreciated, Im not brilliant with fungi and have looked for it in books etc. but with no luck.
Regards
Rob

That's Devil's Fingers Clathrus archeri, "Uncommon to rare in S and W England" according to the new Collins book. Not that I'm jealous or anything....
Good find!

| | | Re: Unidentified Fungi hi
you lucky so-and-so! I've only ever seen this in Cornwall
it's the strange and rather beautiful "gastromycete" Clathrus archeri - related to stinkhorns (hence the "egg")
cheers
Chris
