| | | help with an Leccinum/boletus ident Hi Folks My first year hunting for the table last year I spent just identifying and getting my eye in. I have had a cracking couple of days with some HUGE Iodine Boletus and a few ceps too. I was wondering if anyone could shed light on this one. Not bitter tasting. The closest I can get it L aurantiacumbut the cap colour is more tan coloured than Philips picture which is more orange. Looks more like L rigidipes (p291) but that does not appear to bruise blue black like this one does. |

| | | Re: help with an Leccinum/boletus ident Hi Bob, and welcome to WAB.
Allow me to begin by pointing you to the sticky post in this forum: Is my fungus edible or psychotic requests. While your post does not ask whether the fungus in question is edible, it's generally now considered good form in this forum not to mix in the same post (1) mention of eating fungi with (2) questions of identification.
That being said, and with the caution that I am no expert (the local experts are all on foray at Clumber this weekend), I would offer that the black staining of the flesh and the cap colour are fully consistent with L. aurantiacum in my experience.

| | | Re: help with an Leccinum/boletus ident Hi thanks for posting, as I haven't been able to positively identify them these are not for the pot, just for interest if I'm not 100% they dont go in I can appreciate in these litigious times it would be unwise to encourage someone to eat something.
I believe they were with a stand of mixed conifers and Birch.

then I strongly suspect these are Leccinum versipelle - L. aurantiacum is usually quite closely associated with aspens
cheers
Chris
