| | | Magpie Fungus. Came across this yesterday (8th Oct '10) at Whiteleaf in Bucks..
I'm not a 'fungiphile', so I almost didn't give it a second look, but it was so striking I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm glad that I did because my fungi book says that it's "uncommon".
(For some reason it's not been approved for the Gallery!)

| | | Re: Magpie Fungus. Hiya Jim,
Wow what can I say, that is a stunning photo and a fine specemine too, well done!
I'm on a fungi learning quest and I am sure you are right about it being a Magpie Ink Cap (Coprinus picaceus) and according to my reference books it is uncommon.
Cheers

| | | Re: Magpie Fungus. Great find, and photo, Jim, and one that I'd say certainly deserves to be included in the Gallery.
It's a fungus that I've yet to see - these don't seem to appear at all in my area.
Is the photo still awaiting approval - Photos for Gallery seem to be taking longer to be approved just recently
The only possibility that I can think of if it has been declined is that the common name would normally be "Magpie Inkcap" rather than "Magpie Fungus", but that would seem to be a rather picky reason for disapproval, and I'm sure that the mods would normally just have amended the name rather than decline such a great photo.
Give it a day or so, and try it again Jim, it deserves to be in there!
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: Magpie Fungus. As a result of the latest round of re-classifications this is now called Magpie Inkcap Coprinopsis picacea.
My Collins book describes it as "frequent S England but rare elsewhere". I've certainly seen quite a few in various places in the Cotswolds during the past few years.

| | | Re: Magpie Fungus. I saw my first one of these about 15 years ago and had never seen another until last week when I saw a colony of about 5 on a roadside. Then today I found 2 on another roadside. Must be a good season for them |

| | | Re: Magpie Fungus. What a fantastic forum this is. I saw a picture of one of these on the Fungus of the Day thread earlier in the week. I went out yesterday and found one of my own. It was on a woodland track beneath a beech tree in Hampshire. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
