Can you recommend a good book about fungi. Everytime I try to identify one I seem to have to go through hundreds of pages. I do try to identify them myself (usually unsuccessfully)!!

it's a Suillus species - one of those without a ring; I'm not sure one can go any further from these pictures . . . . there don't seem to be any distinctive markings on the stem so Suillus bovinus would be my suggestion (but only a suggestion - I don't lay claim to be a boletologist)
