| | | Lepiota, but which? There were 4 of these, under beech. All had 100+mm cap diameter.
The one pictured was 110mm. I wasn't sure which group they would be in, and with the size they were I first checked out Macrolepiota (and Chlorophylum, and Leucoagaricus and Leucocoprinus too). Only the spores were the wrong shape. These are characteristic Lepiota shaped, cylindrical but some with truncated, slightly broader end. So I think it must be a Lepiota. Spores are hyaline, and dextrinoid. (The brown spores are them in Melzers.)
Spore size (7.2) 7.6-8.8 (9.4) x (2.8) 3.0-3.5 (3.6) um, Qav 2.6 Cheilocystidia and spores in water.
Cheilocystidia clavate. Cheilocystidia and spores in Melzers
The cap is fibrous, not a hymeniderm, so that narrows it down a bit in Lepiota. With clamps. And the pigment seemed to be only intracellular. The ring was persistent on all of the specimens.
Smell is pleasant, aromatic-fruity clean sort of smell, rather like a hybrid Lepista nuda/Trametes versicolor but nicer .... (and still smells just as good and it has been hanging around in my house for 3 days ... ) Pileipellis 10x Pileipellis 40x, showing pigment and clamps.
Well, I drew a blank. None actually fitted the size for starters, and I couldn't find any of the larger ones that seemed to fit. Hopefully there is someone out there who can do a bit better than me .... They were very handsome so deserve a species name
Thanks

In the absence of any takers, Lepiota arent things I'm greatly familiar with, but L. pseudoliliacea or felina might fit the bill?
Cheers

Ken | the spores of both those are too broad . . . . .the only reason I haven't chipped in is that I had nothing to add to Melanie's confusion - and she's had the thing in front of her, after all

C | I'm thinking it might be Lepiota aspera (friesii or acutesquamosa). For some reason it isn't under any of those names in Funga Nordica. I came to this via a NW America key .... then found it is here in the UK, and details on Bioimages and a few other places seem to match. And this one which has the micro details. Lepiota aspera (MushroomExpert.Com)
And it is common. I wonder where Funga Nordica has hived it off to. But I'll look a bit more closely at the details, make sure I haven't missed anything obvious that rules it out.
