Found beneath silver birch. Are they Paxillus involutus?

I'm inclined to agree for pics 2 & 3, but the first photo looks different.
To me, it looks like it might well be a Bearded Milkcap - Lactarius pubescens.

You may well be right there Mike, definitely evidence of a floccose pileus.

I don't think you mean synonymous . . . . if you mean connected ecologically then yes some are, but others form mycorrhizal relationships with oaks, willows, alders, hazel, beech, various conifers etc
