Looks like a dark log pile - the fungus appears similar to stump puffball, lycoperdon pyriform.

Muuuch better, but I think we can discount Lycoperdon pyriforme due to the size. |

I would say get a sample off to Kew ASAP.
By the way, have you tried peeling this off ? Wondering if it could be something from the Ann Summers shop.

I must admit I wasn't sure what is was. Hence the "Is this a fungus". But it was very small!! |

I really am intrigued by this, is there any chance of your re-locating this fungus in a weeks time and getting another shot ?
The wood looks like Hazel, but if you could check that out as well please.

Unfortunately I was on holiday so can't take another photo. There were hazel trees. Looks like it'll have to stay a mystery. | | | |
