Please help identify - is it an emerging fungi?
Found on southern edge of a very mixed woodland fringe on a damp bank in Wiltshire on 30 September 2010.
I wonder if it is just emerging and will look more 'standard' given time.

Hi, and welcome to WAB.

I'd say you have one of the puffballs there (Lycoperdon sp.), but it looks to have had its cap attacked by slug or something similar.
