| | | Boletus Edulis Hi guys I am new to this site, it's great and it has helped me on my latest foraging trips. I have been reading up for a couple of years now and am really enjoying the trips out around York and surrounding area.
Does anyone know where a good spot is near York to spot Ceps or any Boletus. I found some at Allerthorpe woods this sunday, Boletus Badius though, no Porcinni!
any tips on hunting these please, locations, times of day, habitat etc
Cheers TC |

| | | Re: Boletus Edulis Now where would be the fun if you were told where to look? I like the "thrill of the chase" When my girlfriend and I go foraging we have some idea of what we're after but in exploring for one thing we find many other things (be they edible, beautiful or unusual). My girlfriend is currently into making vegetable dyes for clothing so half the time our bags are filled bark from dead trees, oak galls, berries etc. I myself am determined to track down and photograph (albeit in a blurry over-exposed way no doubt ) a red squirrel before I die.
But if it's ceps and boletus you're after then my advice is buy an OS map of the York area, look at the various woodlands shown and start wandering . We've had a a glut of boletus where we are in Gateshead so I've never had to look when down here working and neither I nor her have found a cep this year.
Regards, David |

| | | Re: Boletus Edulis I appreciate your replies. I am reading up and getting out and exploring, I wasn't asking for a specific tree or patch of land, more the wood types, ground vegetation etc. The books give all this info i guess but i was really just seeing if anyone had any tips or advice.

Cheers TC | I'm assuming you want to photograph them so its ok to respond. It took me around ten years of "light interest" in fungi to find and I.d Boletus edulis. In my view they grow everywhere and nowhere. Keep reading the text and plugging away eventually you will be far more interested in what grows around them and then just maybe.... it tends to be like that with fungi when you go out looking for something specific you miss the golden opportunities all round. If you go out looking for fungi in general you often find some gems, one day's gem will be a cep and you will be able to work out what habitats they like in your area. Some people are just flukey. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
