| | | What type of fungus is this growing on my beech tree? Hello,
I have a 20-meter high copper beech tree, and a few days ago noticed a small white fungus growing on its trunk, around 4 meters above the ground. It is about 8 centimeters (3 inches) across.
I have taken two photos of it, but the focus is not very good. You can see the white stalk and white cap.
Can you identify what type of fungus it is, and what it means for the tree (my friend said some fungus growths spread, meaning the tree might have to be felled, which would be a shame).
Many Thanks, |

Thanks!
I've done some research on it, and it appears that it poses no risk to my tree, because it only affects wood that is dead. So since my tree is still alive it won't require felling. |

May I just confirm that you are saying that the fungus growing on it is an effect of the tree dying, not a cause of it dying. I.e. that the tree is dying, so has some dead wood on it, and the fungus is growing on this dead wood, but the fungus is not actually killing the tree?
What do you think it might be dying from, and is there anything I can do to help it recover?
Perhaps I need to get in a tree surgeon/arborist to take a look. As it is 50 foot high and next to the house, I would rather it didn't blow down in a gale...
Thanks again. |

| | | Re: What type of fungus is this growing on my beech tree? I think its on the badly cut stem of a branch and so it might not be as bad as all that. If you get a TS they will probably tell you to have it down!
As its only on dead wood unless you have it elsewhere i would say that there is nothing to worry about. its not a tree killer and it doesnt attack alive wood! |

It wasn't an assessment at all, I was just basing it on the fact that the ecological role of Oudemansiella mucida is to break down structures and recycle the nutrients found in dead wood for the benefit of other organisms. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
