| | | Magpies everywhere I found a lot of Coprinopsis picaceus today mostly past their best but this one was ok
and then I found this giant almost 40cm tall

| | | Re: Magpies everywhere These have got to be my favourite fungus (along with Old Man Of The Woods S. Strobilaceus) . I think they're visually stunning. I hope you don't mind me asking but were these close to York as Collins Complete Guide lists them as frequent in the south but rare elsewhere?

I would agree with you as OMOTW is another one I have never seen this is a favourite of mine too. These were up at Duncombe Park but I have found them at another 3 or 4 sites arround York. So not that rare in the North.

I am jealous as well: I found one specimen for the first time this year but is was almost over with only an inch of cap left at the top, however I suppose I know where to look for more specimens in the future.
