| | | Pholiota aurivella/Golden Scalycap? Whilst out on sunday in the woods and fields near where I live in Gateshead I found this fungus. Not entirely sure if I've IDed it correctly but it's the closest I can work out with my limited knowlege. It was growing from beneath a log on the edge of a strip of mixed woodland bordering a field. There were several fruiting bodies in a clump together (you can just see them in the third photo.
Apologies for the slight blurriness of this first shot, I couldn't for the life of me keep my hands steady
This picture is it halved, my knife is just over 4 inches
And here's a slightly wider shot showing the fellows peeping from under the log
Regards, Dave |

could the log have been a coniferous one? I would suspect Pholiota flammans
Chris
here are some collected recently, from fallen conifer wood:

| | | Re: Pholiota aurivella/Golden Scalycap? I hadn't dare hope it Philiota flammans. With the log being barkless I wouldn't like to commit to saying whether it was coniferous.
I was judging it by the Collins Complete Guide. And the photo in there seemed more vibrant a colour than what I found. But seeing your photo I'm more than willing to accept the possibility. Plus with the cap not being greasy flammans seems even more viable
I'll be back up in Gateshead friday briefly before heading further north to scotland for a weekend of camping. I may have to take a little trip back to log and see if I can better shots (judging that no kids decide to trample them)
Thankyou for posting your pic, it's a great help

| | | Re: Pholiota aurivella/Golden Scalycap? As I said I would try to get back to the site and take better pictures here they are.
Here are a couple of pics of the young fruiting body appearing on the log (which I'm moderately certain is coniferous now )
And here is a mature specimen I brought back. It was a relatively wet friday morning so it's not looking at it's scaliest (is that a word?)

Found this morning on an old ash tree. A better image is being uploaded into the Gallery.
Thanks J

Rather than generating a new thread for every photo I upload, I am simply adding them to existing threads on the same subject. In the long term this helps save on bandwidth and repetition.
Hope this helps

forum = a meeting where public discussion is held.
Such threads are open to and subject to debate ; including the addition of images. Least they have been on any other forum I've visited,, including this one ; especially the insect sub-fora and the mammal one.
Otherwise, should you not wish people to add further comment to threads in the fungi section.. then close them.
Peace J

I'm assuming this is a Pholiota aurivella var. because it has been accepted as such in the Gallery.
All the best
