| | | Amanita pantherina or not? First of all thanks to Nick and cybershot for your help and encouragement in the FOTD thread. Here are some of the shots. Are these (all) likely to be Panther Caps?
Many thanks,
Deb

As Clumber will be the first time I have seen one you can take my opinion with a pinch of salt but with pure white veil remnants they look good to me.

| | | Re: Amanita pantherina or not? What a bloody good year for old A. pantherina! Lovely specimens Deb, and yes, they're Panthers! Far more exciting than A. muscaria IMO!

| | | Re: Amanita pantherina or not? Oooh crackin' find - I've not seen one of these for many years - the small volva/bag and its connection with the stem is a standard characteristic ofr pantherina too - lovely - lucky you! |

I'd say these were lucky finds. We'd not gone there to look for fungi, specifically. If anything, it was a bird watching trip. And I was initially far more excited about the lovely red Fly Agarics.
But, heck, if Nick says they are good, that's more than enough recommendation for me.

| | | Re: Amanita pantherina or not? Well I suppose I'm biased really! Having spent nearly a decade looking for the things, I've just recently found them so I'm on a Panther Cap high (though not psycho actively ) I much prefer them to Fly Agarics, well, because I see usually about 1,341,325,745,246,957,235,753 of those things at a time having been brought up and living in Breckland and its notorious habitats of Pine & Birch woodland!
I dunno, A. pantherina just seems a little more 'special' |

Never a consistent stream of A panterina though so i wont be looking for them at clumber in the hope that just maybe.............
Nice find Deb. |

| | | Re: Amanita pantherina or not? Thanks alge,
If I'm honest I'm still a bit mystified. They are lovely, I agree. And if they were rare, then I could get really excited, but they are just 'uncommon', no? Do they have good years and bad years, is that it? Someone please help me to get more excited about this find. Because I could name maybe ten fungi that I would be very, very happy about finding. Panthers aren't in that list.
TY
Deb
