| | | Scaly fungus ID Found this one at the edge of a wood growing under beech and ash. Forgot to measure it but I think it was about 6 or 7cm across the cap.
It had an unpleasant bleach-like smell.
I thought maybe a Cortinarius from the webby veil?

having been caught out recently  - dare I suggest this is Lepiota aspera? Cortinarius would have a cobwebby veil which wouldn't leave a substantial ring like that; also Cortinarius has rusty spores, and even though the gills may start out pale they would never be pure white like yours
