| | | Fungus with fibrous margin to cap ?? This "washed out" specimen caught my eye. Is the appearance and fibrous nature of the cap margin due to the weather e.g. rain?
JohnB
P.S. Any help on ID appreciated as well |

Thanks John - it was at the side of the main path at Budby.

John | John - quick question - what differentiates this from L.pubescens?
I am finding a lot of what I am calling pubescens at my work and they look a lot like this, but perhaps I am getting me lactariuses mixed up?

J. | Hi Jus
It doesn't have the familiar 'ring' on the cap like L. pubescens usually has.
John
PS I'm waiting for someone to say they both have rings

| | | Re: Fungus with fibrous margin to cap ?? They are very similar but L. pubescens is slightly smaller and the rings or bands are generally darker than those in L. torminosus.
Difficult to see in this washed out sample I know |

| | | Re: Fungus with fibrous margin to cap ?? OK - thanks John - I shall have a closer look when I'm next in on Monday.
I would post some pics, but I already have a reputation at work as a fungus nerd - I would hate to exacerbate the situation
Cheers,
J.

Difficult to see in this washed out sample I know | Interesting John. I have always considered Lactarius torminosus to have a cap that is zonate with a more distinct pink to brick colouration, while Lactarius pubescens I consider to be a species with little to no zonation.
I'd be hard pressed to firmly call this one Lactarius torminosus on the basis of my interpretation. I also think the colour of Lactarius pubescens strays into pinkish buff so you do get specimens that are hard to confirm without microscopy to look at the spore size.
