Why not just leave them where they are? They are doing an excellent job of rotting down the tree stump.
Can you not just explain to your children not to touch them but to admire them for what they are!

I think it is my fault as we go on country walks where I encourage the kids to eat blackberries, elderberries, cob nuts etc and other stuff I know we can eat. |

Too remove them completely may be difficult as you can't just cut the fruit bodies off the tree trunk. You will need to dig this out I'm afraid. Even then you may still find some growing on any buried debris.
