| | | Day of the Boletus, Some help please... OK, Todays foray has taken me to Abbots Wood in Sussex, so a mixture of Oak, Hazel, Hornbeam and more recently Pine.
Boletus seem to be the order of the day, and also lots of Russula (Coming in my next post), I (Think) I have found my first Cep, plus some other new additions which I am not so sure of..... Boletus edulis
Not sure if these are Boletus edulis and are just older, or maybe V.large Suillus bovinus... about 1/3 of the stem was underground and the Cap is a good 15cm...
I think these are Leccinum carpini... pores are a bright yellow....
For this one I am going for Boletus pruinatus
And last of all I a bit stuck with this one, I was think Bolteus radicans, but then I cut it in two and no blue stain, in fact just a mild brown stain towards the base, which made me think Boletus impolitus but I am not sure....
Help would appreciated.....

| | | Re: Day of the Boletus, Some help please... Hello stewart,
1-4 are B. edulis for sure, sometimes they get a long stipe with that kink in. V.nice
I think you in the right territory with B. pruinatus, Did you cut it to see if the was a colour change in the flesh.
Your last one does look more like B. impolitus with the lack of colour change in the flesh rather than B. radicans.
I'd only be cross referencing the poss leccinum from my books so i'll not chip in with that one.

| | | Re: Day of the Boletus, Some help please... Thanks Alex, really quite pleased now I know I have 4 ceps, and not the 2 I thought I had, excellent news....
Now for the others I have made a mistake in the wording so I have expalined again properly below. As for the B. pruinatus, I cut it just now Alex and there is no change in colour, not even at the base of the stem..... so B.pruinatus is a good bet.
So I am just struggling with this one now.... A whole bunch of these found under brich and hornbeam, some Oak...
They are white when cut, but after being left to dry slightly the cut surface begins to fade to black, in fact in the piture where you see the cut specimen, this was cut at least an hour or two before I took the photo.
Caps are dark brown when younger but going an almost greeny light tan when older with a kind of mottled appearance, small caps are around 3-4cm, older ones are 7-10cm.
Dark scales run the length of the stem.
So I am now thinking L.scabrum or L.rigidipes
