The only thing I could suggest is a Rhizopogon sp which is a Bolete  .

| | | Re: Advice on strange puff ball? I've been finding some yellow things a bit like this under Picea. They look like very bulbous and somewhat distorted cep stems, without a cap. I assumed for a while that they were infected ceps, as the first few I saw were rather past it, but I've now seen quite a few all looking very similar, and in a fresher condition, so will have to investigate further.

I did think about Laetiporus sulphureus but it was growing on the surface, (although roots could have been close). I also considered Choiromyces meandriformis; any comments?
