| | | ID Help Needed - Possible Gyroporus cyanescens Hi Folks,
I chanced upon these growing outside my little boys nursery school! They were under beech and hazel growing in leaf litter. Cap is buff coloured with yellow pores and stem. Stem is very short in relation to cap size and very swollen towards the base. Turns grey blue instantly when cut as shown in photo but this discolouration fades over time. Tastes nutty with a hint of tingliness on the tongue tip before i spat it out. Doesn't smell of much other than leaf litter - maybe slightly metallic smell. It's probably worth pointing out that I saw other blackened specimens nearby that were as large as 10 inches across although these ones range from 1 and a half inches in the younger specimens up to 5 inches in the largest one.
It's one of the toughest I've come across so far so any help would be very much appreciated.
After consulting with Mr Phillips my best guess would be Gyroporus cyanescens.
Thanks as always,
Rich

You have found Boletus radicans (B albidus in early Phillips). One of the distinguishing features is the hollow chambers in the stem for Gyroporus another is the reddish flush in the bottom of the stem for radicans.
