Unidentifiable Bolete

Hello there,

This is my first post so be gentle!



Having gained a fond interest in mushrooms this year i found these. A few friends of mine have been unable to identify these and even with Mr Roger Phillips at hand (be it paper) i cannot find out what they are. They were under oak and have a yellow spore print. These caps are about 5cm in diameter. Many thanks.

Ps if you do know what they are can you tell me what reference book you have for them... i will obviously need to go shopping!

Hi there, I am not expert but I will have a stab at this, I think these are young b.badius, I have many of these near me and I know when they are young the pores are pale, and turn more yellow with age, but the pores on your pictures seem very pale even of a young specimen, but the spore print fits, so I am not about to put money on this, but like you I have been through all my books and can't find anything more similar, the only other near match I found was Gyroporus purpurinus, but this one is native to North East America. One of the trusty experts will be along soon to put us right...

I've had a look at b. badius but like you say the pores are very pale, in fact i would say they were white.hmmm, i'll just keep looking. They do look good enough to eat (though i won't tho!)

It's certainly not one of your 'normal' Boletes. Gyroporus is a good start I think- I wouldn't imagine that this isn't something that would come under Boletus .
