Yellow fungus nr Bracknell

I'm afraid it's another exceedingly poor photo. My excuses are:

1) There was a nasty looking 3 strand barbed wire fence preventing me getting any closer

2) Andrew has mislaid my tripod

Anyway there is a bit of a story to this one as we met a couple walking in the other direction and the guy had a whole handful of fungi. I had a look at them and had to tell him that none were edible but mentioned I'd just see a small bit of Laetiporus round the corner. He said that there were 4 growing on a piece of wood in the ditch a little further on, and this is what I found a few minutes later

Well definitely NOT Laetiporus

but has anyone got any clues even to Genus? The biggest one's probably about 100mm across but I'm afraid I couldn't get close and/or low enough to examine the gill situation.

Looks like it might just be Common Rustgill - Gymnopilus penetrans

Could you not have tried to hoick one out with a stick?

Or at least break one off so you could see the underneath?

I wonder if your other walker is in hospital yet?

Thanks Mike, Gymnopilus looks like as reasonable a match as I'm going to get with my lack of detail.

I would have tried to get it with a stick but the barbed wire was a good 1.5 metres from the fungi so it would have needed 2 v large sticks and a great deal of skill!

I do worry about the other walker - he showed me what he seemed pretty convinced was an oyster and it was a Piptoporus. Don't think I'd like to try his wild mushroom risotto

Hopefully he'll just get a nasty stomach upset that'll be a warning and make him more cautious in the future.
