| | | Re: help Fully agree with what Ken has said, but Coprinus plicatilis has several lookalikes and can only be 100% ID'd by microscopy.
Must admit though, as I don't have a microscope, for my own personal records I tend to log these down as C.plicatilis anyway.
(But if Chris is reading this, then I always log them as Coprinus sp. - honest. ).
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: help Thanks guys
just had a quick google about them to find out more.
Oh and i think i have some idea of just how difficult it can be to get a 100% ID some species.
So i guess my Coprinus plicatilis will just have to be 'some sort of Parasol' or member of the inkcap
thanks again |

| | | Re: help wow! you guys seem to be a bit expert on the matter of 'fungi'
i have a load of photos from over a number of years and never had much luck with 100% id for any of them.
Im sure many will be easy work for you to id though . Although i do hope i have a few that will have you guessing.
I guess as im still new to WAB i should simply keep posting the pics and asking the questions ?? |

Unfortunately they don't get revised as often as the powers that be seem to be changing the names these days. Coprinus plicatilis = Parasola plicatilis = Whoknowswhat plicatilis next year

The more info you can give the better. eg. cap sizes, stipe lengths, spore colour, smell, habitat, substrate, types of tree in vicinity, etc. etc. etc.
If you have a read at this thread, it will give you an idea of the best way to increase your chances: - Help us to help you identify fungi

Regards,
Mike. | Rest assured that in my eyes, taxonomy isn't that important at this level (I was obviously just kidding with you as you know) though I believe it is important to get into good habits by checking the Basidiomycota checklist every time you're unsure |

| | | Re: help Good point Nick - I'm like Mike too on this, even though my 7 reference books are starting to become dated, even including recent Jordan and Collins.
But, perhaps I will check more now...................
Cheers
