| | | Unidentified fungus found on woodland floor
Total newbie here. I suspect quite a straight forward one. Or maybe not.
Found in a dark secluded evergreen thicket in woodland. It was the only fungus I could see in the area.
The gills sort of change colour as the light reflects from different angles, like a hologram.
It was a perfect bright white colour when I found it but now seems to have the odd yellowy patch as seen in images. |

Hello Chris,
Welcome to the WAB. The mushroom you have is Agaricus silvicola commonly known as The Wood Mushroom. If you rub and sniff the cap or stem flesh you should pick up the sweet smell of almonds. Now, if you were to nip a piece of flesh from the base of the stem and it were to go bright yellow and when you sniff the base it smelt of TCP-like you would have a yelow stainer, Agaricus xanthodermus. This is somewhat toxic.

I have had a sniff of the stem and I did indeed get a faint whiff of almonds. I have to say I am very excited about picking and identifying my first ever mushroom! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
