Which Bolete?

Found today: -

I'm fairly confident it's a Leccinum species, but I'm struggling to fit an exact species with the cap colouration & stipe ornamentation of this.

Found equidistant between Beech & Oak, with a few small Birch nearby.

Cap approx. 8cm across. Pores pale yellow.
No bluing of pores when bruised, or anywhere internally when cross sectioned.



Any ID suggestions much appreciated.

From the thumbnail I was going to go for a buff version of the orange capped L versipelle, but that flushes red then blackish when cut, and often has blue-green at the base, which would rule that one out.

I find this group difficult. I've got 3 different ones today to look at, and there were L versipelle and L variicolor also present. But there are so many around this year that I've got plenty of material to work with and hopefully pick up the field and micro jizz, or should that be, put a name to a certain jizz.

L versipelle was described in the recent fungi of the Scarborough district book as 'now uncommon'. This year they are everywhere I go, in big groups too, almost as common and fruiting as long as Amanita rubescens . And much more common than L scabrum has been so far this autumn.

Personally, I think this is L. scabrum that had started growing when it was still wet and continued to develop right through a dry period. Would certainly account for a faded cap and stretched stipe pattern

Nick - I think you are correct!

Struggled with the noordeloos key, but having used the Kibby Key, it keys out pretty emphatically to L.Scabrum.

Keys C-H-L-M relate to macro features, so no problem.
The next step had options for Q, R, or S.
Not having a microscope I was struggling here, so I tried looking at the final "Key Codes" for all three options.
Luckily there were only two possibles: - C-H-L-M-Q, or C-H-L-M-R

C-H-L-M-R would have keyed it to L.rigidipes, which is most unlikely. (Wet heathland habitat associated with Birch - Mine was in the middle of a mainly Beech/Oak area of woodland).

So that left only C-H-L-M-Q, giving final options for L.scabrum, or L,nucatum.

Of the factors for those two options, my specimen had the attributes of option 1, which left L.scabrum as the final keyed out species.
