Hi,
could use some help with this bracket found today on the stump of a dead oak.
It was approximately 200mm across by 20 - 30mm thick. Strong "mushroom" smell, reminded me of the smell of giant puffball.
The top surface was somewhat glossy but dry, not at all slimy and formed a definite tough skin over the flesh. The flesh was off-white to brown (I suspect it may have darkened with age) 10 - 20mm thick and leathery rather than corky.
The tubes were dark brown and 5 - 10mm long.
The pores were whitish turning dark brown with handling, rounded and fairly small >0.5mm across.
Margin was distinctive, almost egg-yolk yellow.
As you can see from the first shot, there was no real sign of spores beneath it. I have taken a small piece and am trying for a print. From what has developed so far I think it will prove to have brown spores.
My best guess is a Ganoderma of some description but would appreciate suggestions.
Regards
Steve
