| | | Re: Piggyback Bolete Ha ha ha, thats a brilliant find. I'm sure moonpig would buy the image off you to make a card from it.
Thanks that genuinely made me chuckle. |

| | | Re: Piggyback Bolete I thought "bicep" was pretty good - but there you go . . . .
while this is quite an extreme example, I don't think it's that unusual - how many times have you found siamese-twins in shop bought mushrooms?
see: siamese twin mushrooms | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
and File:Agaricus bisporus (Cup mushroom, doubled).jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and What Has Happened To This Mushroom(s) ? - Naked Scientists Discussion Forum
I remember once finding a Lepista nuda with a virtually stemless sibling perfectly upside-down and attached cap to cap - looking like an old fashioned diabolo toy
it's to do with the way fungi grow . . . . the fruit bodies' growth - at least as regards cap and stem hyphae - is not as determinate as is found in most plants and animals (a notable exception of course is the Laboulbeniales - where the growth of every single cell is determinate, but these are tiny, relatively few-celled fungi): http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/pi...hp/photo/69703
so the larger one has picked up the smaller one on its way and because the hyphae have been able to link up (we are almost certainly talking about two off-shoots of the same mycelium here - so no 'compatibility' issues) and continue the transfer of nutrients and growth they're both quite 'happy'
I would encourage people to look out for this phenomenon during the forthcoming season and post any finds on this thread
cheers
Chris

Curiously it reminds me of those Steve Bell cartoons of John Gummer as a pipsqueak boil on Margaret Thatcher's nose
I resisted the temptation to pick them for the pot. Not that difficult when you have that image ...
