| | | Can anyone confirm if this is C. cibarius please Having only ever seen them on the pages of a book or in a french market I cant say for sure that these are Chanharellus cibarius or not. After finding Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca for many years i am happy to conclude they are not them.
Found under sweet chestnut on clay, there were a lot of mycena looking fungus around and a lot of ramaria (possibly R.stricta) evident too.
Probably fifty or so fruit bodies the images below show the two most mature.
I did nibble a smaller one which tasted ok and had a slight peppery finish. the flesh is white and turns very slightly golden on bruising after a while.
The gills do look widely spaced and are clearly decurrent (as a note the yellow peels easily)
cap margin sinuate on all specimens except the very youngest.
Colour varied from creamy yellow to almost luminescent (but not the same orange as H. aurantiaca)
I'm pretty sure but would really appreciate a second opinion.

I am not sure abaut the color on the cap, it looks a bit purple to me.
There is a variety with such a purple colouration on the cap and this one is almost without taste, i think the name is var. amethysteus
cheers Stip

The colouring was an initial concern but i understand they can vary a little, but it looked nothing like any of the images of C.var. amethysteus. i have found so far. I took some round to show a B.M.S. member yesterday evening and she was over the moon and confirmed Chis' opinion.
I would like to find C.var. amethysteus as they do look beautiful.
Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.
Alex
