| | | Tuber aestivum? (I think) Not sure about this one, found growing at the base of a sycamore tree, half in the ground half out, clearly attached to the tree stump by a small part of the tuber..... you can see this in the picture.  
Smells mushroomy, slightly sweet, any ideas please...

| | | Re: Tuber aestivum? (I think) Sorry Stew - This looks interesting, but not sure this is T.aestivum. I would expect aestivum to be much more 'warty' on the outer surface - like this one
and more marbled, and slightly darker yellow / brown in the cross section.
Having said that, I'm fresh out of suggestions - not much experience with tubers...

On the photo of the speimen cut in two you can see the perithecia around the inside edge of the fruitbody. This is a Xylaria species. Most likely Xylaria polymorpha
