| | | 8cm bolete - yellow spores
Good morning all
I wonder if anyone could tell me what this one is. It was fairly near where the aereus bolete was found a few days ago, but although I wondered if it could be a younger version of the same, the books seem to suggest either a rooting or iodine bolete.
I'm sure I'm wrong - opinions would be welcome.

| | | Re: 8cm bolete - yellow spores Did you cut it to see if it changed colour? B. radicans will discolor pale blue in the stipe when cut. B. impolitus as suggested by the common name, will smell of Iodine when cut and will not change colour.

| | | Re: 8cm bolete - yellow spores Is'nt it interesting that I have never had problems distinguishing these three Boletes when looking at them in the field but when you have to do the same thing from a photo it becomes much more difficult.
You have to quantify the differences and I think Nick has done that well. No sign of blue on handling so not Radicans but it would have been handy to have a photo of it cut in half. This would also have shown if there was yellow above the tubes and inside the skin of the stipe which would have given impolitus. The smell would also have helped but overall I think Nick is right and it is one of the edulis clan and splitting them is even more of a problem.

Thank you both - I just chopped the poor thing.
It had lost its bright yellow colour when I took that photo this morning and now it's darkened even more.
The blue staining appeared the instant I cut it, but there is almost no smell - other than the general fungal variety. |

you can also chew a little bit - B. radicans is bitter.
best regards,
Andreas
