Luminous blue fungus

A friend of mine recently was walking at night and trod on a fungus which when he looked at it was glowing in the dark a aquamarine blue colour, unfortunately he didn't take a sample but does anyone have any idea what it might have been?

Hi Stewart

There are lots of 'Bioluminescent Fungi', mainly belonging to the Tricholomataceae family. Worldwide, most are in the genus Mycena.

The rhizomorphs / Mycelium associated with certain Armillaria species are probably the most common in the UK.

I'm sure others will have more information on this 'feature'
