| | | ID Help please, found in woodlands on the south downs This one has me stumped, I was thinking tephrocybe confusa, and it seems to fit, but is nowhere near conifers or spruce, so I am struggling, any help would be appreciated, this was a single specimen, growing on submerged dead leaves or wood, quite a bit of this came up with it when I plucked it out, gills are adnate and spores are white'ish, cap is slightly lighter brown in the centre....
Help please....

I can tell you it is growing from wood and is a Pleuteus but even with the furrowed cap I am not sure which species

I don't think it's a Pluteus . . . doesn't look pink-spored and doesn't have free gills
why isn't this a somewhat atypical Xerula radicata?
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: ID Help please, found in woodlands on the south downs Thats what comes with jumping in and not reading the post properly and only looking at a couple of the photos
It certainly would be "atypical" though, I have never seen a Xerula with anything other than a straight stipe.

| | | Re: ID Help please, found in woodlands on the south downs My first impression on seeing the gills was that they do suggest Xerula radicata but I agree this looks an atypical specimen. I've been looking through the books to see if there are any other possibilities but nothing springs to mind.

| | | Re: ID Help please, found in woodlands on the south downs It does look a very ‘dry’ specimen and probably not in the best condition!
The general shape of the stipe doesn't quite match Xerula radicata ... to me
