Anyone out there keen on Lactarius 
This one was found in pine/birch woodland. The caps (max 3cm) were a rich red/brown with a pale edge (both of which have faded over night  ). The very bitter milk was white turning green/gray. This milk did not change when KOH was added.
spores ave 7.9 x 6.4  
Using The Genus Lactarius and a Synoptic Key from the BMS I get L pilatii which is not in the Checklist.
Any other possiblities.

I would probably have keyed this out as an unusually dark coloured Lactarius vietus, were it not for the lack of a reaction of the latex with KOH. According to Basso, the milk of L. vietus should turn ochre-orange with KOH.
Your description of how the caps looked when fresher fits better with the images I have of Lactarius pilatii than how they appear in your photos. The images I have show a somewhat darker and more uniformly coloured cap, whereas yours are starting to look a little zonate towards the margin (sort of L. flexuosus/roseozonatus-like, although the milk would remain white in these species).
Your specimens would key out to Lactarius pilatii with all the keys I have, as you suggest. Being confident that that's what they are is another thing altogether though!
